Being a digital nomad sounds like a utopia.
Sometimes it is true, sometimes it is not, so as an independent distal nomad / freelance, I would like to explain "How to become a digital nomad with no experience?"
How to become a digital nomad with no experience?
- Narrow down your profession
- Enhance your skillset
- Get a contract and keep working
Let's take a look at each step.
Narrow down your profession
But before doing that, please remember that "passion + skill = your strength".
This means that if you are good at something, but do not like it, it will be difficult for your to keep doing that job and your profession for many decades.
Your job has to be something you love and are good at.
So your profession has to be something you truly love and you are good at.
If you love something but are not good at it yet, do not worry about it because you can just simply practice doing it.
Look back on your career and your current job and try to think "What kind of skillset do I have that I can use for becoming a digital nomad?"
The skillset has to be something free from a specific location and specific timezone.
The possible skill set to be a digital nomad is as below.
- Web Marketing (This is me)
- Blogging & SEO (This is me)
- Web Design
- Web Developer
- Engineer
- Some kind of consultant
- Stock/Forex trader
This is the list that I can come up with, so there must be other jobs that suit the digital nomad lifestyle.
I am writing this blog post at Narita International Airport in Tokyo, and for me, it feels exactly the same as I write a blog posts at my home.
If I listen to music and become focus mode, wherever I am on this planet, the work I do is all same.
Enhance your skillset
The second thing you want to focus on is to brush up and enhance your skill set.
Since you want to become a digital nomad, knowing your profession and enhancing it will be the next step.
You can not become a digital nomad instantly because if you want to become a digital nomad, you will need decent amount of income before quitting your current job.
I did the same way; even I make money from this blog, I still have my client-based contract works going on.
So enhancing your profession to the level that you can be an independent freelance is the next step you want to focus on.
The concrete way is to get a job related to your profession and brush up your skillset, or keep working at the current job and do the internship as your sidejob to enhance your skillset if your current main job is not related to what you want for becoming a digital nomad.
If you want to be a fulltime independent blogger, the door is always open to everyone.
Please refer to the below related blog posts of min e to know more about blogging as a profession.
Get a contract and keep working
The third step is at last very practical; jump into the jungle of capitalism and do the hunting.
Being a digital nomad means you make your money by your own, so it can not be a salary that comes to you every month.
If the work that you do is all between you and your clients, then it is a true digital nomad lifestyle because you are the owner of the contract and you can take 100% of the payment that clients pay unless you outsource something to other freelancers.
Get the contract and keep working sounds like the easiest part but this is actually the most difficult step of becoming a digital nomad.
If you do not offer the value to the client, no one will become your client.
Summary
My answer towards the question "How to become a digital nomad with no experience?" is as below.
