I broke my smartphone almost 2 weeks ago, and I spent days without it.
But I bought an iPad yesterday.
Let's take a look at why I came to the solution to buy an iPad.
Summary of Day1-Day10
Basically, I don't have any intention of giving up my smartphone, but accidentally I dropped my smartphone.
Through spending days without my smartphone, I found both positive and negative effects of not having it.
The conclusion that I came to is to have an iPad (Wifi + Celler Model) instead of my smartphone.
In this article, I would like to show you why having an iPad is so useful for people who want to do a digital detox.
The benefit of having an iPad instead of a smartphone
Based on the situation that you do not have your smartphone or any other devices that you can insert your SIM card, having an iPad is so useful.
There are 3 benefits that I can think of; those are...
- Access to the emergency contacts
- You can not use it while walking
- Less screen time than phones
Access to the emergency contacts
This is one of the benefits of having an iPad.
If something really emergent happens, you have a way to get connected.
If you have at least a tablet that you can use for the emergency situation it will be something comfortable.
Without any portable devices, this is not possible.
You can not use it while walking
Another benefit of having an iPad is you cannot use it while walking.
In Japan, it's very common to see people using smartphones while they're walking.
This is very dangerous because you only see a small dimension of the screen while walking and you're not paying attention to the surrounding situation.
Replacing your phone with an iPad will stop this habit immediately.
Less screen time than phones
If you keep using digital devices for a long time, you may notice that your eyes are really exhausted.
You have to have a phone or tablet to be able to use some government-related apps or Internet banking apps.
This was the most difficult point of not having any phone or tablet in the 21st century.
My conclusion was to have a bigger and heavier version of the phone which is a tablet.
After buying an iPad I do feel my screen time is increasing day by day.
Especially when I'm outside with my friends, I barely check my iPad because it's heavy to take out of the bag, so I don't want to do it often.
Having a bigger screen tablet than fun enables you to increase your screen time so easily.
The difficulty of having an iPad instead of a smartphone
Also, there are some difficulties/disadvantages of having an iPad as your only device, and those are...
- An iPad is Heavy
- You have to have a bag to carry around
- Can not use SMS and phone call
An iPad is Heavy
The tablet is usually heavy so if you are traveling for a long time, carrying a heavy tablet all the time will be something annoying.
This is actually the most annoying part for me but I chose to stick to a tablet not a phone because of the benefits I have shown in this article.
It's heavy but you will get some benefits from it.
You have to have a bag to carry around
In addition to the fact that tablet is usually heavy, you have to have a bag to put your tablet in.
If you are a person who wants to go out without any bag, this will be a problem.
However, having a tablet is a light version of digital detox I guess.
As it's troublesome to carry around all the time, sometimes you may want to leave your tablet and go out without it.
Can not use SMS and phone call
As this is a functional aspect of the disadvantages of tablets, it's not possible to call someone using your phone number or texting using the phone number.
If you're living in a country where SMS is used, this may be the annoying part as well, so to be able to SMS or call, you need to have a flip phone or something equivalent to that.
Overall, I do recommend you switch from your phone to a table because you will not check it often as now and also you will be able to decrease your screen time.
Replacing your phone with a tablet is the first step in digital detox.
