Let's go to Convenience Store to get ODEN!!!

Me trying to get warm by eating ODEN

As written in the article 5 reasons why Convenience Stores in Japan are Amazingly Convenient, convenience store in Japan is super convenient; meaning they sell almost every single genre of product.

One of the surprising products to see in the convenience store is ODEN.

It is nothing but amazing to be able to try the Japanese traditional street food from the convenience store which is opens 24/7...

What is ODEN?

ODEN is Japanese traditional street food.
Its category is either immersed dish or stew.

We use the special soup for ODEN which is kind of close to the soup of udon or soba, but definitely different from those.

What you see in ODEN is typically vegetableseggs , and sometimes chicken.
Since ODEN is warm food, we Japanese people love to eat it during the cold season such as between October and the end of February.

ODEN is said to be already very popular among the people of the Edo period.

Traditionally ODEN was sold on the street because it's one of the Japanese Street food, but as the culture of convenience stores becomes more popular in Japan, the convenience store became to sell ODEN so that people can access it very easily at any time.

ODEN at a convenience store in Japan

This is what ODEN area in the Convenience Store looks like.

You do not have to ask the clerk to open the ODEN lid.

It's just in front of the cashier so you will find it easily where the ODEN area is.

Usually, you can find ODEN very easily at any Convenience Store around this season ( October to February ).

How to purchase ODEN?  It's very simple.

You just find a ladle close to ODEN and you just pick up whatever you want to the plastic vessel which is also put near ODEN.

Here is what the menu looks like.

The price these days are about 100 yen. (8% consumption tax added so it's 108 yen)

The popular lineups are...

  • Daikon (white radish)
  • Egg
  • Shirataki
  • Mochi wrapped in a soy-based bag
  • etc...

My suggestion is absolutely egg.

The egg boiled with the Japanese special soup, oh my god it's beyond description.

You just got to come to Japan and try it out.

It is very common that you also put some soup with ODEN.

Soup is at no charge.

What to eat with?

So I came back home to eat ODEN.

If you are a traveler here in Japan, onigiri ( rice ball ) will be something that gets along with ODEN very well.
Onigiri is also sold at Convenience Stores.

I usually do that when I don't prepare the rice, and as mentioned before, ODEN is originally a street food, so the size and the shape are both very easy to eat at any place even on the street ( yes of course )

Burdock roll ODEN. SUPER DELICIOSO
